Carbohydrates

It’s important to acknowledge that carbohydrates are not the enemy! They are essential, and we need them. Here’s why!

  1. Carbohydrates are our body’s preferred source of energy
  2. They fuel our brain and nervous system
  3. Every cell and tissue in the body utilizes carbohydrates as the preferred source of energy

There are common misconceptions based on current diet fads that have people fearing carbohydrates. However, you don’t need to avoid carbohydrates to achieve weight loss. Certain types of carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet.

There are three main categories of dietary carbohydrates which are sugars, starches, and fibres. Each source of carbohydrates is also defined as either ‘whole’ or ‘refined’. You may also hear them referred to as ‘simple’ or ‘complex’.

Whole carbohydrates consisting of starches and fibre contain natural fibres and are minimally processed. These are the carbs you want to consume more frequently as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Fibrous carbs actually aid with weight loss because they help you feel fuller longer. They also keep your bowel movements regular, reduce the risk of diabetes and they even protect you against heart disease!

Refined carbohydrates are usually highly processed, high in sugars, and can be pretty addictive. These carbs are generally high in calories but low in volume, quickly leading to overconsumption because they are less satiating. Overeating these types of carbohydrates can lead to obesity and other illnesses. Therefore, they should be eaten in moderation.

Have no fear, complex carbs are here! Make sure to enjoy healthy carbs as a part of well balanced nutrition plan.
