Quick answer

What is GFIT's online emotional eating coaching?

GFIT Wellness offers online emotional eating coaching for Winnipeg and Manitoba adults, led by Amanda Chartrand, a senior GFIT coach who spent seven years in the restrict-binge cycle before healing her own relationship with food, and now coaches from that lived experience. Coaching combines Registered Dietitian nutrition expertise with Registered Social Worker, Psychologist, and Clinical Counsellor mental health support. It addresses stress eating, restrict-binge cycles, late-night eating, and food-as-comfort patterns. It is not a substitute for clinical treatment of diagnosed eating disorders; appropriate referrals to specialized clinical care are provided when that is the right path. Often covered by Canadian extended health insurance plans, NIHB, VAC, and CAF benefits.

The program

Emotional eating isn't a willpower problem. So we don't treat it like one.

01
Coaching scope

Validation lead, not solution lead

The reframe comes first: food has become entangled with stress, comfort, and reward. The strategy follows the understanding, not the other way around.

02
RD-led · monthly

Nutrition rebuilt without restriction

Strict meal plans usually make emotional eating worse. Registered Dietitians build flexible foundations instead of rules to break.

03
RSW + CC-led · monthly

Behaviour change support

Working through triggers, patterns, and the all-or-nothing thinking that drives the cycle.

04
PSY support · monthly when relevant

Mental health support layered in

When clinical psychological care is the right path, Psychologists layer in.

05
Care coordination

Coordinated with therapy if you have a therapist

We complement therapy. We never replace it.

06
Care coordination

Clear scope boundary

Diagnosed eating disorders (BED, anorexia, bulimia, ARFID) require clinical care. We refer out to specialized clinical support.

Major Weight Loss, GLP-1 Support & Healing Your Relationship with Food

Most GFIT emotional eating clients work directly with Amanda, one of our most senior coaches. She leads this program from lived experience: years spent in the restrict-binge cycle before she learned that the answer was never another diet — it was healing her relationship with food.

"I spent seven years trapped in yo-yo dieting, binge eating, and food guilt before I learned the answer was never another diet. It was healing my relationship with food. That shift changed everything. Now I help people across Winnipeg and Manitoba break the restrict-binge cycle and build an approach to food that finally feels sustainable, not punishing."
Her specialty:

People caught in the restrict-binge cycle, yo-yo dieting, and food guilt. People who are tired of extremes and want an approach to food that finally feels sustainable rather than punishing — built with them, not imposed on them.

"This week would have rocked me months ago. I would have turned to alcohol or binging fast food to cope with my stress. This week I felt mentally strong, and fueled my body with good, whole foods."

Jennifer H. · Amanda's client
★★★★★

"I'm proud of how far I've come with my mindset around finding a sustainable balance. I used to over-compensate with extra cardio if I had some extra eating planned. Now I make healthy choices without the punishment."

Lisa B. · Amanda's client
★★★★★

"I feel such shame that it got this bad, but I'm making changes — and I'm starting to enjoy it. It's becoming routine."

Christine Ormiston

Emotional Eating & Mental Health Coach, Winnipeg

Christine coaches from lived recovery experience. Over 12 years sober and a philosophy built on compassion rather than shame.

"Emotional eating was never a willpower problem for me, and it isn't for the people I work with. It's what happens when food becomes how we cope. I don't believe in quick fixes or shame. I believe in education, compassion, and structure that actually lasts. That's the work I do with clients across Winnipeg and Manitoba: building the skills underneath the change, from lived experience as much as training."

Scope of practice

Clear about what we coach and what needs clinical care

What GFIT coaches

  • Stress eating, late-night eating, restrict-binge cycles
  • All-or-nothing thinking, food as comfort or reward
  • Mindless eating, diet fatigue, food rules
  • The behaviour and emotional patterns underneath

What requires clinical care (we refer)

  • Diagnosed binge eating disorder (BED), anorexia, bulimia, ARFID
  • Active medical complications from disordered eating
  • Concurrent severe mental health crises
Need clinical care? If a diagnosed eating disorder or a mental health crisis is part of the picture, we'll help you connect with appropriate specialized clinical support.

FAQ

Common questions about emotional eating coaching

What's the difference between emotional eating and binge eating disorder?
Emotional eating is a common, non-clinical pattern. Binge eating disorder (BED) is a clinical mental health diagnosis with specific criteria. BED requires clinical treatment, not coaching. We'll talk through where you fall on the discovery call honestly.
Is emotional eating something I can change?
Yes, when coaching addresses both the food side and the feelings side. Neither alone works.
What experience do your coaches bring to emotional eating?
Amanda Chartrand, one of GFIT's senior coaches, leads this program and coaches from lived experience healing her own relationship with food, alongside her coaching training. Christine Ormiston also coaches on this program, bringing lived recovery experience. Coaching is paired with monthly 1:1 sessions with Registered Dietitians, Registered Social Workers, and Clinical Counsellors.
Will you put me on a strict meal plan?
No. Strict meal plans usually make emotional eating worse.
Can you help with restrict-binge cycles?
Yes. It's a common pattern. Coaching addresses both sides: rebuilding regular eating and working through all-or-nothing thinking.
Is emotional eating coaching covered by insurance in Manitoba?
Often yes, and sometimes from multiple categories of your plan, since RD, RSW, CC, and PSY are typically separate billable lines. Coverage varies by plan.
Do you work with people who have a history of eating disorders?
It depends on recovery stage. Stable recovery with an existing treatment team: we may layer alongside their care. Active or unstable: clinical care needs to come first, and we refer.
Can I work with both a Registered Dietitian and a Registered Social Worker?
Yes, and this is the typical emotional eating model.
How long until I see changes?
First 4 to 6 weeks: fewer extreme episodes, more awareness. Deeper pattern change: 3 to 6 months or more.
What if I've done therapy and it didn't help with the food?
Therapy often misses the nutrition and structure layer. Coaching adds it alongside the emotional work.
