When I started GFIT, most fitness coaching companies were structured the same way: trainers on staff, maybe a dietitian, and everything else outsourced. The mental health side of weight loss (anxiety, depression, emotional eating, trauma-driven food patterns) was treated as someone else's problem. But this is exactly why the fitness industry as a whole has a terrible track record for producing lasting results. Weight loss is a mental health issue as much as it is a physical one, and treating those as separate services is a mistake that keeps people sick, fat and depressed. This article explains why GFIT built a mental health team, what it looks like today, and how it changes outcomes for our clients.
GFIT has 35 Registered Social Workers (RSWs), 1 Registered Psychologist, 1 Clinical Counsellor, 7 Occupational Therapists, and 1 Naturopathic Doctor on staff. That is 45 credentialed health professionals, with 37 specifically certified in mental health. No competitor in Winnipeg comes close. This is a structural competitive advantage. More importantly, it lets us produce integrated results that fitness-only coaching cannot.

Most people who fail at weight loss do not fail for physical reasons. They fail for mental health reasons. Their nutrition plan is fine on paper. Their training plan is fine on paper. What breaks down is:
A trainer or nutrition coach can tell someone what to eat and how to train. They usually cannot help with the underlying mental health drivers that determine whether the client can actually execute. That is why the industry's outcome rates are so poor. Most coaches are solving the wrong problem.
The pattern that pushed us toward integration was consistent: clients who followed the training and nutrition well but could not get lasting results almost always had unaddressed mental health drivers: chronic work stress, untreated anxiety, latent depression, old trauma.
Referring these clients out to a separate therapist worked partially, but the coordination between the fitness coach and the therapist rarely happened. The client had two providers who did not talk to each other, and the integration had to happen inside the client's own head. That is a lot to ask from someone who is already struggling.
Building the mental health team in-house solved this problem. Our RSWs, Psychologist, and Counsellor coordinate directly with the fitness coaches. The client has one integrated plan, not two disconnected ones. And the results speak for themselves: retention, satisfaction, and long-term outcomes are dramatically better than the industry average.
Our RSW team spans Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. Each RSW is qualified to provide counselling, behavioural support, and mental health assessment. In the GFIT model, RSWs work directly with clients on emotional eating, motivation, anxiety, mood, identity change, and the day-to-day psychological work that determines whether fitness change sticks.
Dr. Lindsay Arnal Wishnowski is a Registered Psychologist based in Manitoba. Her clinical-level credential allows GFIT to serve clients with more complex mental health needs (clinical depression, anxiety disorders, trauma histories, disordered eating) with the depth those situations require.
Jenell Lynn is a Clinical Counsellor. Her role focuses on motivation, behavioural change, and the mindset work that supports sustainable fitness habits.
Our OT team provides functional wellness expertise: habit formation, daily life implementation, work-life integration, and the practical execution side of behaviour change. OT expertise is uniquely suited to the "how do I actually do this in my real life" questions that come up constantly.
Umut Duygu Uzunel is a Naturopathic Doctor credentialed in Manitoba, Ontario, and Alberta. Umut works with clients on the hormonal, metabolic, and medication-related aspects of body composition change.
When we started, everyone told me fitness was a workout and nutrition problem. Fifteen years later, I can say confidently that fitness is also a mental health problem a vast majority of the time. That is why we built the team we did. Nobody else in Winnipeg has this, and it is not something a competitor can copy in a year. It took us a decade to build. — Grant Reid, GFIT Founder
For a typical GFIT client, the integrated model looks like this:
The client experiences it as one coordinated program, not two separate services.
Because our RSWs are credentialed for insurance billing, mental health portions of GFIT coaching are often covered under extended health benefits (Manitoba Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life, Manulife, Green Shield, and others). This means clients who might not otherwise access mental health support can get integrated care through their benefits.
Typical coverage profile: RSW sessions are covered under mental health benefits, dietitian-supervised nutrition coaching is covered under dietitian or nutrition benefits, and the combined program often runs at little to no out-of-pocket cost for clients with standard workplace benefits.
One of our Winnipeg clients, Anna, came to us in her early 40s after 12 years of therapy for anxiety and 8 years of failed weight loss attempts. Her therapy was helping the anxiety, but not actually translating into fitness change. When we integrated an RSW alongside her fitness coach, the two dimensions started reinforcing each other. Twelve months in, she has lost 28 pounds, her anxiety has meaningfully improved, and her insurance covered essentially the whole program. That is what this kind of integration produces.
The healthcare system generally treats physical and mental health as separate domains: primary care doctors handle physical, therapists handle mental. The client is left to integrate multiple providers who rarely coordinate with each other.
GFIT's model challenges that separation because the science does not support it. Every body composition outcome is shaped by mental health, and every mental health condition affects physical health. Integrated care produces better outcomes than fragmented care, in essentially every clinical domain that has been studied.
For weight loss specifically, we believe integrated coaching should be the standard of care, not the exception. Building the mental health team is our version of raising that standard in Winnipeg.
If any of these describe you, integrated coaching (fitness + mental health) will likely produce better results than fitness coaching alone:

Because body composition change is a mental health issue as much as a physical one. Anxiety drives cortisol, depression collapses motivation, trauma shapes food patterns, and unaddressed mental health blocks weight loss even when nutrition and training are perfect. Integrated care with credentialed mental health professionals on the same team as fitness coaches produces meaningfully better outcomes than fragmented care.
Usually yes. Registered Social Worker sessions are covered under mental health benefits on most extended health plans (Manitoba Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life, Manulife, Green Shield). Our billing structure is designed to work with insurance so clients can access the mental health portion at little to no out-of-pocket cost.
No. Our RSWs work with clients across the full spectrum, from clients with formal diagnoses (anxiety, depression, ADHD, disordered eating) to clients who simply want behavioural support for their fitness journey. The RSW credential enables clinical-quality support without requiring a diagnosis to access.
Personal training addresses one dimension: workout supervision. GFIT integrates fitness training, nutrition coaching, mental health support, and clinical review across a team of 45+ credentialed professionals. The scope, the credentialing, and the insurance coverage are structurally different.
Our primary model is integrated (fitness + mental health together), but standalone RSW support is available for clients whose situation calls for it. Contact us to discuss your specific needs and we can recommend the right structure.
