GFIT coach Makayla DeBellis — women's muscle building and body recomposition coaching in Winnipeg
Makayla DeBellis Skinny-to-Strong Muscle Gain Coach
Quick answer

How can women build muscle and change their body composition?

GFIT Wellness provides personalized women's muscle-building and body-recomposition coaching in Winnipeg, throughout Manitoba and online across Canada. Clients combine progressive resistance training with individualized nutrition, adequate protein, recovery and weekly 1:1 coaching to build muscle, strength and shape. For some women, body recomposition may involve building muscle while gradually reducing body fat. For others, the right strategy may be a dedicated muscle-building phase rather than trying to lose more weight. Your GFIT coach adjusts your training and nutrition based on your starting point, goals and progress, with additional monthly support from Registered Dietitians and other registered health professionals.

The program

You can't build your best body by constantly trying to lose it.

Muscle development requires a different strategy. We bring training, nutrition, progression and recovery together so your body has both a reason — and the resources — to change.

01
RD + coach

Eat enough to actually build muscle

Building muscle requires energy and adequate protein. If you've spent years dieting, eating more can feel counterintuitive. Your team helps establish nutrition targets based on your body, training and goals — without turning a building phase into an uncontrolled "bulk."

02
Strength programming

Train for muscle not just calorie burn

Sweating more doesn't necessarily mean building more muscle. Your program focuses on progressive resistance training, productive volume and exercise selection designed to challenge the muscles you actually want to develop.

03
Coach · weekly

Progressive overload that creates change

More reps. More load. Better technique. Greater range of motion. More productive volume. Your coach tracks your performance and progression so you're not simply repeating the same workouts and hoping your body changes.

04
Physique-focused

Build shape strategically

Glutes. Legs. Shoulders. Back. Arms. Where you develop muscle influences your overall physique. Your program can prioritize specific areas while still developing a strong, balanced body.

05
Recomposition

Stop letting the scale define progress

You can weigh the same and look completely different. Body recomposition shifts the focus beyond scale weight to muscle development, body fat, measurements, progress photos, strength and how your body actually changes over time.

06
Coach + pros

Build without living like a bodybuilder

You don't need to spend your life meal prepping, avoid restaurants or train seven days a week to build muscle. Your coach helps make nutrition, training and recovery fit your actual schedule so the process is sustainable beyond one transformation phase.

GFIT coach Makayla DeBellis
Skinny-to-Strong & Women's Muscle Gain

Makayla DeBellis

Makayla knows this journey personally — she was "always the skinny one," and chasing smaller through less food and more cardio only left her weaker. A Kinesiology grad and certified nutrition coach and personal trainer, she now helps women stop shrinking themselves and start building real muscle, strength and shape by fuelling their bodies and training with intention.

"Eat with intention, train with purpose, and build a strong, feminine physique you're proud of — without burnout, restriction or guilt."

★★★★★

"I'm lifting 15–20 lbs heavier for legs and 10–15 lbs more for upper body than last week — and I'm already seeing more definition in my shoulders and traps."

★★★★★

"My quads, abs and delts feel firmer, I can feel it now when I flex. And mentally, I feel more confident and far less anxious than I used to."

★★★★★

"I went from two assisted pull-ups to three — and I'm not as terrified to step on the scale anymore. My whole body feels like it's changing."

Carlena · Jelena's client

Coach positioning uses verified credentials and substantiated specialty language. If your primary coach's caseload is full, you'll be matched with another coach whose experience aligns with your goals.

Evidence-based & realistic

What we do and what we don't

There's a lot of bad information directed at women who want to build muscle. GFIT focuses on progressive training, adequate nutrition and realistic expectations — without promising a completely different body in eight weeks.

What GFIT coaching does

  • Weekly 1:1 coaching & personalized resistance-training programs
  • Muscle-building & hypertrophy programming with progressive overload
  • Body-recomposition strategies & individualized calorie/protein targets
  • Glute, lower-body & upper-body development; strength tracking
  • Dedicated building phases and fat-loss phases, when appropriate
  • Monthly registered-professional support & coverage review

What we don't do

  • Promise lifting weights will change your genetics
  • Guarantee a specific amount of muscle gain or a physique by a deadline
  • Promise simultaneous rapid fat loss and muscle gain
  • Keep cutting calories when the goal actually requires more fuel
  • Prescribe endless cardio or encourage uncontrolled "dirty bulking"
  • Promote performance-enhancing drugs; treat eating disorders out of scope

The goal isn't to become as small as possible. It's to build a body that's stronger, more capable and aligned with how you want to look and feel. If restrictive eating or body image is a struggle, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline (1-866-662-1235) can connect you with support.

FAQ

Women's muscle building & recomposition common questions

Can women build muscle without getting bulky?
Yes. Building significant muscle takes progressive resistance training, adequate nutrition and time. Women don't accidentally develop extreme amounts of muscle from strength training. Your program can be designed around the amount of muscle, shape and strength you actually want to develop.
How can women build muscle?
The fundamentals include progressive resistance training, adequate protein, sufficient overall energy and recovery. Your training needs to become progressively challenging while your nutrition provides enough energy and nutrients to support muscle growth.
How much protein do women need to build muscle?
Protein needs vary based on body size, total energy intake, activity and goals. Rather than applying one number to every client, GFIT's Registered Dietitians can help establish an appropriate protein target and show you how to distribute it throughout your day.
Do I need to eat more to gain muscle?
Sometimes. If you're chronically under-eating or already relatively lean, your current intake may not adequately support muscle growth and training performance. Depending on your starting point, your strategy may involve increasing calories toward maintenance or using a controlled calorie surplus.
Can women build muscle and lose fat at the same time?
It can happen, particularly in beginners, people returning to resistance training and some individuals with greater fat stores. However, maximizing muscle gain and maximizing fat loss involve different nutritional priorities. For many clients, dedicated building, maintenance and fat-loss phases are more effective than trying to aggressively pursue both goals indefinitely.
What is body recomposition?
Body recomposition means changing the proportion of muscle and body fat rather than focusing only on total scale weight. A woman may gain muscle and lose fat while her weight changes very little — yet look and perform substantially differently.
How many days a week should women lift weights to build muscle?
There isn't one ideal number for everyone. Effective programs can be built around different schedules depending on your experience, recovery, goals and available time. What matters is providing enough productive training volume and progressively challenging your muscles over time.
Why am I lifting weights but not gaining muscle?
Common reasons include insufficient training progression, inadequate calories or protein, inconsistent training, poor recovery, ineffective exercise selection or simply not allowing enough time. Your coach reviews the entire picture rather than assuming you just need to train harder.
How long does it take women to build noticeable muscle?
Muscle growth is gradual. Training experience, genetics, nutrition, consistency, recovery and your starting point all influence the rate. Strength improvements may occur relatively quickly, while visible physique changes generally require consistent training over a longer period. GFIT doesn't promise a specific amount of muscle by a fixed deadline.
Is women's muscle-building coaching covered by insurance in Manitoba?
Standalone fitness coaching may not qualify as an extended-health expense. However, eligible monthly sessions with GFIT's Registered Dietitians, Registered Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Naturopathic Doctors and Clinical Counsellors may qualify under your plan. GFIT also works with NIHB, VAC and CAF benefits. We'll review your specific coverage during your free discovery call.
