Why it's different

HYROX isn't just running. And it isn't just strength.

Eight 1 km runs separated by eight functional workout stations — your training has to prepare you to run, lift, carry and work efficiently while fatigue keeps building.

Runners often have the engine but lack the strength and power for sleds, carries, lunges and wall balls. Lifters are strong but lose time once repeated kilometres and accumulated fatigue enter the equation. And simply bolting more running onto a lifting program — or more lifting onto a running program — doesn't automatically create effective hybrid training. GFIT owns the intersection: strength, running, conditioning, recovery, nutrition and race preparation, balanced so one goal doesn't constantly undermine the other.

The program

One progressive plan for running, strength and the work between the runs

Personalized programming that balances competing demands — not a generic 8- or 12-week race template.

01
Coach · weekly

Build your running engine

Easy aerobic work, threshold development, intervals and race-specific running — programmed around your current ability so you can handle repeated kilometres rather than simply survive them.

02
Strength programming

Get stronger without sacrificing your running

Squats, hinges, lunges, presses, pulls and loaded carries build the strength behind hybrid performance — balanced against endurance demands so one goal doesn't undermine the other.

03
HYROX-specific

Train for the work between the runs

Sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer's carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls — progressively preparing you for the movements and fatigue patterns of race day.

04
Race-specific

Learn to perform under fatigue

HYROX isn't eight isolated workouts — it's repeated running and functional work under accumulating fatigue. Training combines modalities so you learn to pace, transition and keep moving when tired.

05
RD-led · monthly

Fuel strength and endurance

Hybrid training creates different demands than lifting or running alone. Registered Dietitians align protein, carbohydrates, hydration and energy intake with your training load and performance goals.

06
Recovery

Train hard enough. Recover well enough.

More volume isn't automatically better. Your plan considers sleep, stress, soreness and training history so you build fitness without treating exhaustion as evidence the program is working.

GFIT coach Wyatt Fadden
Hybrid Athlete & HYROX Training

Wyatt Fadden

Wyatt is the natural lead for GFIT's HYROX and hybrid-athlete program. His coaching sits right at the intersection of running and strength — helping endurance athletes get stronger and strength athletes build the engine to perform beyond the weight room. He brings his own running and hybrid-training background, including marathon preparation, into the coaching relationship.

"Runners need strength. Lifters need an engine. Hybrid training is about building both without letting one come at the expense of the other."

GFIT coach Natalie Lopes
Strength, Recomp & Performance

Natalie Lopes

Natalie brings the progressive-strength and performance side of hybrid training — resistance training, progressive overload, technique, body composition and performance. She helps clients build the strength and muscle required to produce force even when endurance work is a major part of the program.

"You still have to produce force when you're tired. Strength training is what keeps your running holding up on race day."

GFIT coach Kaitlyn Ferens
Functional Strength & Conditioning

Kaitlyn Ferens

Kaitlyn brings a broad functional-training background relevant to hybrid athletes — supporting the movement quality, loaded carries, functional strength and work-capacity demands that sit alongside running in a hybrid program.

"Loaded carries, kettlebells, movement quality — the work capacity that sits right next to your running in a hybrid plan."

Coach positioning uses verified credentials and substantiated specialty language. Wyatt is GFIT's HYROX & hybrid-athlete specialist; Natalie and Kaitlyn provide complementary strength/performance and functional-conditioning expertise. Nutrition guidance is reviewed by a GFIT Registered Dietitian.

Honest scope of practice

What we do and what we honestly don't

HYROX coaching should improve preparation — not promise a podium.

What GFIT coaching does

  • Weekly 1:1 certified coaching & personalized HYROX/hybrid programming
  • Running & aerobic development + progressive strength
  • Functional conditioning & HYROX-specific movement prep
  • Race-pace & pacing strategy; training-volume management
  • Performance nutrition support & recovery coaching
  • Beginner through experienced-athlete programming; monthly registered-pro sessions

What we don't do

  • Guarantee a finish time, PB or podium
  • Send every athlete the same 8- or 12-week template
  • Treat exhaustion as the goal of every workout
  • Ignore strength because you're a runner — or running because you're strong
  • Diagnose or rehabilitate injuries outside appropriate scope, or replace physiotherapy or medical care
  • Encourage unsafe training volumes or promise more training always means better performance

The goal isn't to train as hard as possible. It's to arrive on race day prepared for what the race actually asks you to do.

FAQ

HYROX & hybrid training common questions

How do I train for my first HYROX?
HYROX preparation should develop running, strength and race-specific conditioning together. Your GFIT coach builds a progressive program around your current fitness, available training time and race date rather than simply adding HYROX stations to random workouts.
Do I need to be a good runner to do HYROX?
No, but running is a major part of the event and should be trained accordingly. If running is currently a weakness, your program can progressively develop aerobic capacity, running tolerance and pace while maintaining the strength work required for the stations.
How much running should I do for HYROX?
It depends on your current running experience, fitness, race timeline and total training load. A HYROX program may include easier aerobic running, threshold work, intervals and race-specific sessions. Your coach determines the appropriate mix rather than assigning the same weekly mileage to everyone.
How many days per week should I train for HYROX?
There isn't one ideal number for every athlete. Training frequency depends on your experience, schedule, recovery and race goals. Your program needs enough exposure to running, strength and HYROX-specific conditioning while still leaving enough recovery to adapt.
Can I build strength and improve my running at the same time?
Yes. Hybrid training deliberately combines resistance and endurance training. The challenge is managing exercise selection, volume, intensity, scheduling, nutrition and recovery so the two goals complement each other rather than constantly competing for recovery.
What exercises should I train for HYROX?
Your program should prepare you for the demands of the race, including running and the eight workout stations: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer's carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. General strength work remains important because the goal isn't simply to rehearse the race every week.
Do I need access to HYROX equipment to train?
Not necessarily for every session. General running, strength and conditioning can be developed without a complete HYROX setup, and some race movements can be substituted when necessary. As your race approaches, access to relevant equipment becomes increasingly useful for developing familiarity and race-specific skill.
What should I eat while training for HYROX?
Hybrid athletes need enough overall energy to support both endurance and strength work. Protein supports recovery and muscle, while carbohydrates are particularly important for fueling higher-intensity and endurance training. A GFIT Registered Dietitian can personalize intake, hydration and race-fueling strategies to your training load and goals.
Can beginners train for HYROX?
Yes. You don't need to be an elite athlete before starting. Training should simply begin at your current level and progressively build the running, strength, movement skill and work capacity required for the event. First-time competitors are an important audience for personalized coaching.
Is HYROX coaching covered by insurance in Manitoba?
Standalone fitness or HYROX coaching may not qualify as an extended-health expense. However, eligible monthly sessions with GFIT's Registered Dietitians, Registered Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Naturopathic Doctors and Clinical Counsellors may qualify under your plan. GFIT also works with NIHB, VAC and CAF. We'll review your specific coverage during your free discovery call.
